On the horizon

5/02/2021
  • The Government's review of post-Brexit employment rights has been abandoned, a matter of days after it was announced.  It had been due to look at possible reforms of the Working Time Regulations, including clarification of holiday pay.   Instead, cases being considered by the Supreme Court this year may cast further light on this complex area.
  • The Government is consulting about possible reforms to post-employment non-compete obligations.   Options under consideration include requiring employers to pay full or half salary during the non-compete period and legislating to set a maximum length for non-competes.
  • The National Minimum Wage rates are due to increase in April 2021.  The new rates are as follows:
National Living Wage (ages 23+)

£8.91

Age 21 - 22 rate

£8.36

Age 18 - 20 rate

£6.56

Age 16  - 17 rate

£4.62

Apprenticeship rate

£4.30

Accommodation offset

£8.36

  • The National Living Wage will be payable to all workers aged 23 years and over, a change from the current 25 years age threshold.
  • From April, changes to off-payroll working in the private sector will come into force, having been delayed last year as a result of the pandemic.  Please consult our dedicated hub for more details.
